Every winter Stadion Narodowy transforms into a sporting winter wonderland. All the ice-based activities you can think of, and some you can’t, under the cosy roof of the National Stadium.
To start there are three ice rinks with plenty of room to practice your technique. Be warned, the regulars are good ice skaters and if you are new to the ice you will be out-skated by tiny children. However, it’s the perfect place to strap on some skates, lean forward and get in some practice. Gloves and a warm coat are highly recommended.
After something different? Learn the noble art of curling under the guidance of professional instructors. Curling is like bowls on ice, and therefore a thousand times cooler. The aim is to slide a stone disc down the ice into the target zone. Teammates can help the stone’s movement by using brushes to shine the ice and steer it towards the target.
Ever wanted to slide down an eleven-metre ice hill in a giant inflatable ring? We thought so. This is the place. There are even circular inflatable bumper cars if you haven’t had your fill of fun.
Away from the ice there is an indoor skate park. Lessons are available, so if you’ve always wanted to hit the half pipe but didn’t know where to start, this is your chance.
After all that exercise, skate up to the winter food zone to warm up and recharge. There are two ice bars, perfect for sipping a drink and comparing those ice rink bruises.
For the full Warsaw winter experience, come during the ‘Disco Lodowisko’ (Ice Rink Disco) from 11pm on a Friday or 10:15pm on a Saturday to glide around the ice to a beat-heavy soundtrack.
National Winter is at the National Stadium (Stadion Narodowy) on the east side of the river. All equipment is available to hire. Prices and opening hours can be found on the official website.
